釈迦像

この釈迦像は、真理を悟ることから得られる内なる平穏と静けさを表しています。現在は失われていますが、当初は上げた右手で恐れを振り払い、安心をもたらす独特のアバヤ・ムドラーの手印を示していました。釈迦は仕 立てられていない簡素な僧衣をまとい、悟りの境地を拓いたことを示す、大きな光背と、自然と超自然双方の縁起の印(ラクシャナ)によって聖像(完全な涅槃の状態)であることがさらに強調されています。仏教の伝播とともに発達した美術様式の頂点を示す作品として、この様式はアジア全域における釈迦像の基準となりました。
