ヤクシャ(夜叉)

ヤクシャ(男性の精霊)は自然界を人格化したものですが、時とともに仏教とヒンズー教の両方で豊穣と富を象徴する副神として崇められるようになりました。この太鼓腹の小人は、当時上げた腕で頭上の鉢を支えていたことからバーラヴァハカ・ヤクシャ(運び人)であったことが分かっています。この様式に最も近いものとして、ボーパル近くのサンチにある初期の大規模な仏舎利塔(崇敬の対象となる遺物を納める古墳のような建造物)の柱頭にある彫刻が現存しています。このヤクシャは入り口に置かれ、参拝者が頭上の鉢にお布施を入れたものと思われます。
