ハンス・メムリンクは1465年から1494年に亡くなるまで、ブルージュの画壇の第一線で活躍しました。この肖像画は、ブルージュの大きなイタリア商人のコミュニティーに属していたトンマーゾとマリア・ポルティナーリを描いた作品です。トンマーゾは1465年から1478年まで、ブルージュでメディチ家の銀行の支店長を務めていました。北方ルネサンス美術の傑作に数えられるこれらの肖像画は、おそらく1470年のふたりの結婚に際し制作されたものと考えられています。当時マリアは約14歳、トンマーゾは約42 歳でした。この2枚は、かつては携帯用の三連祭壇画の両端のパネルで、中心には聖母子像が描かれていました。
