1673–75年頃に描かれたヤン・ステーンの後期のこの作品で、彼は左手に見える泥酔した宿屋の主人として自分自身を描いています。中心にいる魅惑的なポーズの女主人は、ステーンの2番目の妻のマリアがモデルとなったと思われます。彼女のコップと太った男のジョッキには、性を暗示しているだけでなく、女主人が親しそうにしている若い演奏家が持っている弦楽器の形が、音楽以外の申し出をしていることを示唆しています。着飾った男の子は、大人たちの言動に対する欄外のコメントの役割を果たし、くつわをした馬と鞭は一般的に禁酒の象徴とされています。
