ヴィーナスとアドーニス
ルネッサンスのヴェネツィア派の最も偉大な画家だったティツィアーノは、オヴィディウスの『変身物語』の場面を描いた2枚の絵を、それぞれスペインのフィリポ2世と、ローマのファルネーゼ家のために制作しました。現在ではファルネーゼ家の絵は失われています。女神ヴィーナスは、狩りに旅立つ人間の恋人アドーニスを引き止めようとむなしく努力します。絵画の陽気な奔放さとは裏腹に、神話ではアドーニスが狩りの間にイノシシに殺される運命にあるという皮肉な悲劇に至ります。彼の晩年の最も力強い作品には、古典の神話の官能性と残酷さとの対比を扱ったものがいくつかあります。
