北野天神縁起絵巻(詳細)

京都の北野天満宮は、9 世紀の学者であり政治家であった菅原道真(845–903年)を祭っています。道真は宮廷で政敵の誹謗中傷にあい、左遷先の大宰府で亡くなりました。その後いくつかの天災や異変疫病が発生し、政敵が不慮の死を遂げたことから、道真の怨霊を鎮めるため、彼の意をくんで都の北西に彼を祭る北野天満宮が建立されました。今日では学問と書の神として信仰されています。
