春屋妙葩像

この一幅は高名な禅僧、春屋妙葩(1311–1388年)の頂相です。京都の寺院のために描かれたものですが、妙葩による銘があり、葬儀や追悼の儀式と関連付けられた中国発祥の肖像の伝統を踏んでいます。名高い禅師の風貌を捉えたこの種の肖像画は、日本では追悼の儀式用としてだけでなく、禅師から門弟へ仏教の教え(ダルマ)が正しく伝わったことの証として作られました。妙葩の肖像は、熟練した筆遣いと、衣や顔の細やかな彩色により、見る者を引き付ける力強い作品となってい ます。
