明皇幸蜀図

33年間にわたって善政をしいた唐の玄宗皇帝(在位712–56年)は、745年に側室の楊貴妃と恋に落ち、彼女を寵愛するあまり政治を顧みなくなりました。楊貴妃お気に入りの安禄山将軍が755 年に反乱を起こし、楊貴妃の責任が問われると、玄宗帝は首都西安から安全な蜀地(今日の四川省)へと逃亡を強いられ、そこで楊貴妃の処刑を要求する軍の反抗にあいました。不本意ながらこれに同意した玄宗帝は、処刑の光景を恐怖と断腸の思いで見守り、時をおかず退位しました。この絵は処刑後の打ちひしがれた皇室側近者の様子を表したものです。人物の着衣などは唐時代のものですが、立体感のあるフォルムや霧の立ち込める雰囲気を複雑に表現した風景描写から、12世紀中頃の作品であることが分かります。
