天地創造と楽園追放

この作品は天地創造の物語からふたつの場面を描いています。当館所蔵の《楽園》とともに、シエナのサン・ドメニコ大聖堂のグェルフィ礼拝堂に置かれた祭壇画下部の裾絵(プレデッラ)の一部を成していました。セラフィム(大勢の天使)に支えられている父なる神が、新たに創造された天地を指差します。山と川が四大元素(地水火風)と十二宮に囲まれています。アダムとイブは、果樹、ユリ、バラ、カーネーションが生い茂る楽園から追放され、随伴する天使が通常と違い裸の人間の姿をしているのは、神の恩寵を失った人類の堕落に対する慈悲心を象徴しているのかも知れません。
