1950年以降、ロスコは作品のなかの水平の帯を3~4色に限定し、他界するまでこの構図で作品を制作しました。異なる種類のウェットメディア(絵具)を使い、また絵具の層の厚みを変え、時にはアトリエで作品の縦横の向きを変えることもありました。事実、この作品に見られる絵具の滴りの跡から、彼がキャンバスをしばらく上下逆にして描いていたことが分かります。ロスコが大型作品を制作したのは「仰々しくうぬぼれた」ものが描きたかったのではなく、柔らかい光が鑑賞者を包み込む「非常に親しみが感じられる人間性のある」作品をつくりたかったからだと語っています。
