ローマ・バロック様式の装飾美術逸品に数えられるこの金箔を貼ったケースは、5オクターブの音域がある、めずらしいイタリア製のハープシコードを収納するものです。元々トディニがローマに開いたギャラリア・アルモニカ(楽器の博物館)に収蔵されていた楽器で、1676年の蔵品目録に記載されています。ポリフェムス(ギリシャ神話の登場人物)がバグパイプを鳴らしている像と、驚いた様子のガラテア像は、ハープシコードとともに風景の描かれた背景画の前に展示されたと思われます。オルガンのパイプを覆った「山」の上にポリフェムスを配置し、オルガンを鳴らしてバグパイプが音を出しているかのように演出しました。トディニの創意工夫は、1700年までにピアノが発明されるに至ったのと同じ音楽的環境から生まれたものでした。
