18世紀末から19世紀初頭にペンシルベニア州で活動したドイツ系の陶芸家は、地元で採取した赤色粘土で地方市場向けに日常用陶器や高級陶器を製作しました。母国の技能と装飾の伝統をもつ移民によってノーザンプトン郡で作られたこの作品は、ドイツ系ペンシルベニア陶芸の特色であるかき取り仕上げ(スグラッフィート)が施された作品の好例です。この技法は、硬く乾燥した粘土に白い泥漿をかけ、先のとがった道具で表面を削って赤い下地を露出させるものです。この作品は、典型的な簡略化された孔雀と花を意匠としています。
