멸망한 명 왕조에 계속 충성하고자 했던 은둔자공현은 청 왕조(1644 –1911년)의 지배하에서 자신을 유민, 즉 “남겨진 신하”로 여겼습니다. 패망한 명의 수도 남경과 그 주변 장소를 즐겨 찾았던 공현은 그곳을 신의 주거지와 비교하여 그린 화첩에 포함된 이 작품에서 자신의 은둔 생활을 묘사하고 있으며 시를 덧붙였습니다. 그 시는 고결한 품성을 상징하고 추운 겨울을 견디는 능력이 있는 난초를, 땔감으로 사용되는 딸기나무(하찮은 사람)와 대비시키는 내용입니다. 공현은 수묵의 기법과 점묘법을 완성하여 회화의 밀도와 투명성을 동시에 표현하였습니다.
