고양이 형상의 손잡이가 있는 물병
이 물병은 초기 이슬람 미술이 어떻게 그 이전의 문화로부터 영향을 받았는지를 보여주는 작품입니다. 물병 형태는 파르티아 제국(기원전 247–서기 224년)과 사산 제국(서기224–651년)시대의 금속세공을 떠올리게 합니다. 물병 주둥이 테두리의 오리 머리와 몸체를 뒤덮은 추상적인 식물문양은 전적으로 사산 양식에서 유래한 모티프입니다. 전체적인 구도와 조형은 그때까지 성행했던 사실적인 양식으로부터 초기 이슬람 시대에 점차 선호되던 율동적, 반복적인 패턴으로 변해가는 과도기적인 양식을 보여줍니다. 손잡이는 길쭉하게 늘어난 고양이 형상으로서 주둥이 테두리의 오리를 마치 금방이라도덮칠 것처럼 응시하고 있습니다.
