갈라 엘뤼아르
1921년에 에른스트는 쾰른에서 시인 폴 엘뤼아르와 그의 러시아인 아내 갈라를 만났습니다. 에른스트와 엘뤼아르는 이 방문으로 평생 우정을 간직하게 되지만 에른스트와 갈라는 갑자기 연정을 느끼기 시작하였습니다. 1922년 에른스트는 파리로 이주하여 1924년까지 엘뤼아르 부부의 집에서 지냈습니다. 그때까지 에른스트는 초현실주의 창시자 중 한 명으로서 활약하고 있었습니다. 갈라와 결별할 무렵 에른스트는 맨 레이의 사진을 모사한 이 회화에서 러시아인 요부로 갈라의 눈을 표현하였습니다. 그녀의 머리 윗부분은 포스터같이 벗겨져 앞으로 말려 있습니다.
