바버라 헵워스는 헨리 무어와 함께 20세기의 가장 위대한 영국 조각가이며 역사상 가장 유명한 여류 작가 중 한 명입니다. 거대한 영국산 느릅나무의 줄기를 직접 깎아서 제작한 타원형은 그녀가 조각가로서 절정에 이르렀을 시기에 발표되어 헵워스의 중요한 성숙기 작품 중 하나가 되었습니다. 이 작품의 난형 형상은 1933년에 인생의 전환점이 된 콘스탄틴 브랑쿠시의 파리 아틀리에를 방문해서 착상을 얻었지만, 끈은 그녀의 친한 친구이자 그녀의 남편 벤 니콜슨과 함께 영국 작가 모임의 일원이 된 헝가리 피난민 나움 가보와 라슬로 모호이너지의 작품에서 유래하였습니다.
