Kushiro Unsen Japanese

Born in Shimabara, Hizen province (present-day Nagasaki prefecture), Unsen was renowned for his refined and poetic landscapes. The artist studied with Chinese painters active in Nagasaki, a city that served as a major center of cultural exchange with Qing-dynasty (1644–1911) China. In the 1790s, Unsen traveled extensively through western Japan, eventually residing in Osaka, Edo, and ultimately Niigata. Unsen’s landscapes combine elegant literati ideals with sensitive observations of nature.
