춘옥묘파 초상화
일본 선불교의 유명한 선승인춘옥(1311–1388년)의 이 공식 초상화는 교토의 사원을 위해 제작되었으며 춘옥묘파 자신의 명문이 기록되어 있습니다. 이 초상화는 원래 장례식 및 추모제를 위해 제작되던 중국 초상화의 전통을 따르고 있습니다. 그런데 일본에서 이러한 초상화는 추모제를 위해서뿐 아니라 선사가 문하생에게 불교의 가르침(달마)을 성공적으로 전달했음을 인증하는 방식으로서 선사의 특징을 묘사한 회화를 의미하였습니다. 이 초상화는 능숙한 묵필의 사용과 정교한 채색으로 의복과 얼굴의 세부를 대담하게 묘사하여 보는 사람을 끌어들이는 강렬한 힘이 있습니다.
