Este quadro, um dos mais famosos do artista, é a versão final de uma série inspirada no refrão de uma canção bretã antiga: “Hélas! Je sais um chant d’amour, / Triste gai, tour à tour” (Ai, se é uma canção de amor / de vez em quando triste ou de vez em quando feliz). Com suas figuras que lembram a do pintor veneziano do século XV, Vittore Carpaccio e sua paisagem “arturiana” imersa na luz vespertina, A canção de Amor reflete a profunda influência do Renascimento italiano e do movimento pré-rafaelita goticizante.
