Questo quadro, uno dei più famosi dell’artista, è la versione definitiva di diverse opere che egli basò sul ritornello di una vecchia canzone bretone: “Hélas! je sais un chant d’amour, / Triste ou gai, tour à tour” (Ahimè, conosco una canzone d’amore, / triste o felice, di volta in volta). La canzone d’amore, con le figure che ricordano quelle del pittore veneziano quattrocentesco Vittore Carpaccio e il suo paesaggio “arturiano” immerso nella luce della sera, rispecchia la profonda influenza del Rinascimento italiano e anche del movimento goticheggiante pre-raffaellita.
