Cassetta frame on a polyptych panel

ca. 1325
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 952
This panel by Simone Martini depicts the fourth-century martyr and first apostle of Siena Saint Ansanus. With 1975.1.12b it forms part of a polyptych, of which five panels are known. Overlaying the profile of this panel with that of 1975.1.12b confirms the existence on the former of an additional layer of gesso on either side of the frieze. This has now assumed the craquelure of the underlying surface.
