На печально известном Салоне Отверженных 1863 г. Мане представил триптих, в который вошли «Завтрак на траве» (Музей д'Орсе, Париж), «Молодой человек в костюме махо» (в коллекции Музея), и настоящая работа. Один писатель заметил: «Мане любит Испанию, а его любимый живописец, вероятно, — Гойя, контрастным оттенкам, свободному и пылкому стилю которого он подражает». По наблюдениям многих Мане воспроизвел сцену из графического цикла Гойи «Тавромахия» на заднем плане этой картины. Художник изобразил свою любимую модель Викторину Меран позирующей в маскарадном костюме.
