1863年パリの不名誉な落選展で、マネは、《草上の昼食》(パリ、オルセー美術館収蔵)、《マホに扮する若者》(当館蔵)、そしてこの作品を3 部作として出展しました。なかには「マネはスペインを愛し、ゴヤに最も傾倒しているようだ。鮮やかで対称的な色彩、自由で激しい筆使いを真似ている」と書いた批評家もいました。マネがゴヤの《ラ・タウロマキア》(闘牛技)の場面を背景に使ったことは広く認められています。この作品では、マネのお気に入りのモデルだったヴィクトリーヌ・ムーランを描いており、彼女は仮装舞踏会のために衣装を着てポーズをとっているかのようです。
