Auf dem berüchtigten Salon des Refusés 1863 stellte Manet seine Werke Frühstück im Grünen (Musée d'Orsay, Paris), Junger Mann im Majo-Kostüm (in der Museumssammlung) sowie dieses Gemälde als ein Triptychon zusammen. Ein Autor bemerkte: „Manet liebt Spanien, und sein Lieblingsmeister ist offenbar Goya, dessen klare und kontrastreiche Töne, dessen freie und feurige Pinselführung er imitiert." Wie viele feststellten, übernahm Manet eine Szene aus Goyas Tauromaquia als Hintergrund für dieses Bild. Der Künstler malte sein Lieblingsmodell, Victorine Meurent, als ob sie in ihrem Kostüm für einen Maskenball posierte.
