Покатая треугольная линия плеча, визуально удлиняющая шею, была в почете большую часть XIX века. Этот идеал красоты нашел отражение в деталях корсажа официального платья 1860-х годов с характерной открытостью плеч и вырезом-лодочкой. Поскольку линия плеч была обнажена, корсеты были без бретелек или с заниженными и расходящимися бретельками. Создание широкого, в форме колокола, силуэта юбки той эпохи было возможно благодаря введению кринолинового обруча десятилетием ранее. К середине 1860-х годов эти все более расширявшиеся обручи были способны поддерживать самые широкие юбки.
