在视觉上突出脖子长度的三角形斜肩线是十九世纪大部分时期炙手可热的款式。这种审美观念也反映在1860年代正式外衣的紧身上衣细节上，通常以露出肩膀、有平底小舟般的领口线条为特点。由于肩膀露在外面，因此里面的紧身胸衣要么是无肩带的，要么就是肩带很低并向外张开。这一时期的裙装之所以可以采用宽大的钟形廓型要得益于一个世纪以前发明的裙衬架。到1860年代中期，这些越来越宽的衬架已经能够撑起最极端的裙摆幅度了。
