由于石灰石和大理石很容易获得,古希腊的大型雕像通常不以赤陶(烧制陶)为原料。头像的比例和脖颈处的断口都表明这只无比精美的头像原本属于一尊狮身人面像,而且曾经可能是一座小型建筑屋顶装饰的一部分。传统上狮身人面像的角色是守护者,尤其是在墓地纪念碑上,如同前图所示的阿蒂卡墓碑一样。特别值得注意的是这里运用了多种色彩来表现耳环和头带等细节。
