十一世纪晚期著名的山水画家郭熙致力于用具体的形态表现诗意的画面和情感，他尤其钟爱传达季节和时间的微妙之处。《树色平远图》是经典的“平远”画法之变体，平远画法中前景常有大树，背景则是宽阔的河谷。这幅作品可能是画家在退休前夕为同僚所作的晚期画作。在手卷的末端，秃树和浓雾使画面笼罩在凄凉的秋色中，两位老者向凉亭走去，或许是要与同事一起送别朋友。
