11世紀後半の山水画の第一人者だった郭熙は、詩的な情景や感情の形象化を試み、特に四季と一日の微妙な時の移ろいを表現することに関心を持っていました。「樹色平遠図」は、幅広い峡谷を遠景として、高い樹木を前景に配置した、古典的な「平遠」法に手を加えた晩年の作品で、退職間近の同僚の役人ために描いたものとされています。巻末の、友に別れを告げる者たちと交わるためふたりの老人が東屋を訪れる場面では、枯枝の木々と深い霧が侘しい秋の雰囲気をかもし出しています。
