The Sound of Spring in a Lonely Valley

Hongren Chinese
1661
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 215
Hongren was a pioneer of the Anhui regional school of painting, which is typified by the sparing approach to light-toned ink and the dry, angular brushwork seen here. This manner is often associated with the dramatic vistas of the Yellow Mountains (Huangshan), one of the treasures of the Anhui landscape and a frequent retreat for artists and Buddhist monks—Hongren was both—in the seventeenth century. Lesser known is the fact that Hongren, like many Anhui artists, visited nearby Nanjing and interacted with artists there, creating linkages and cross-pollinations.
