德加在1870年中期创作出这幅画及其姐妹作品（现藏于巴黎奥赛博物馆），当时它们是除了历史题材绘画之外最能显示德加野心的人物作品。一位女舞者摆出舞蹈姿势让老师检查，芭蕾舞女和她们的母亲共约二十四位女性在旁等待。欧洲著名舞蹈家和芭蕾大师朱尔·佩罗指导着这堂想象中的舞蹈课，地点在不久前被烧毁的老巴黎歌剧院中的一间排练室里。这幅画是歌剧演唱家和收藏家让·巴蒂斯特·富尔在1872年委托德加画的。德加一生中只接受了少数几次委托作画，这就是其中之一，他断断续续地画了两年才完成。
