这件作品表现基督的手法属于典型的十二世纪风格：基督的双眼睁开，头戴王冠，已经战胜死亡。大胆的纹路刻画出基督的胡须、肋骨和缠腰布，大部分涂有颜料和镀金的装饰都是原来就有的。十字架背面中央饰有“上帝的羔羊”（拉丁文：Agnus Dei）图案，四端有四位福音书作者的符号，表明该十字架的最初设计是要让人能从两面观看的。关于这件作品最初的地点有不同的说法，一说它来自帕伦西亚附近阿斯图迪略的圣克拉拉女修道院，但资料来源不甚可靠。
