这件鎏金琴盒是罗马巴洛克式装饰艺术中出类拔萃的典范,其中放置的拨弦键琴有不同寻常的宽广音域,达到了五个八度。这件乐器最初是托蒂尼位于罗马的“和音展馆”(一个乐器博物馆)中的一部分,他在1676年的展览目录中对其有描述。两侧的塑像分别是吹奏风笛的波吕斐摩斯和受到惊吓的伽拉忒亚,他们曾与拨弦键琴一同放置在布景前展出。波吕斐摩斯坐在一座“大山”上,山中藏着的音管能模拟出他手中风笛的声音。这一时代的音乐环境不仅孕育出托蒂尼的独出心裁,也使钢琴在1700年左右诞生。
