While platform shoes are typically associated with the 1940s and 1970s, they first came in to modern fashion in the late 1930s, with many of the most innovative and inventive treatments tried between 1937 and 1942. The design of this pair of shoes (and an identical pair in the Brooklyn collection in white suede made for the same client) is unique and very high style, illustrating the inventive and whimsical designs from that period. The undercut heel was introduced by designer Seymour Troy in 1939, and is here stylized into a dramatic S-shaped focal point.
