This scene evokes the melancholy of exile, as Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana embark on their fourteen years of wandering in the forests following their banishment from Ayodhya, before Rama’s eventual return to the capital to be crowned as the rightful ruler of the kingdom. As the model of devoted marriage tested through hardship, Rama and Sita proved a popular subject for images to be displayed in the home.
