Millicent Rogers, the donor of this bed jacket, was an American fashion icon with exquisite taste. She frequented both French and American couturiers, preferring those designers with off-beat creativity and unusual sensibilities. Jessie Franklin Turner, the designer of the jacket, who was recognized for designs that reflected different cultures and for her intriguing textile designs, fits that description. This particular example of Turner's work is especially appealing because it exemplifies her proclivity for the softest, most delicate of colors and hand-embroidered decoration. Turner catered to women who were individualistic dressers as Millicent Rogers was known to be; this object shows an interesting connection between designer and client.
