Cap

The labyrinthine dress customs of the Victorian and Edwardian periods required extensive ensembles for all occasions, including "undress" when a lady was relaxing in her home. Stemming out of earlier conventions of modesty and piety, house caps continued to be worn into the early 20th Century, by which time they had developed into lacy confections exemplified by this example. The high quality lace is combined in graduated tiers with looped satin ribbon to give a feeling of lightness, delicacy, and femininity.
