Exeter tradesmen, such as the merchant Harry Maunder and the baker Thomas Grygge, proudly owned cups that combined silver with other materials, such as wood, coconut, clay, and stone. One might assume mixed media objects were favored because they offered a less expensive alternative to goods made exclusively of silver, but during the sixteenth century there was genuine appreciation for the contrasting look and feel of composite objects. Such treasures were regularly singled out in wills to bequeath to sons and daughters.
