Despite differences in wealth, Exeter homeowners displayed remarkable conformity in their furniture. Whether it belonged to a merchant or vintner, bladesmith or cook, the main room almost always featured a table and a cloth cover, known as a carpet. Textiles were rarely used as floor coverings, but elaborate table carpets, like the one seen here, were necessary to protect and adorn one of the most public pieces of household furniture.
