Salver
Isaac Liger British
Not on view
These elegant salvers, used for serving in the dining room, were commissioned by Edward Phelips, who inherited from an uncle the Elizabethan manor of Montacute. Although the estate was burdened by debt, Phelips bought substantial quantities of silver and seems to have entertained generously. It was not uncommon for aristocratic clients to postpone paying the tradesmen who worked for them, sometimes for years.
