Terracotta antefix

Roman

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 166

Antefixes are decorative covers for the ends of tiles situated at the edge of a roof. This example, showing Venus (Aphrodite, the goddess of love) and her lover Mars (Ares, the god of war), retains a considerable amount of its painted surface.
