Terracotta kylix: band-cup (drinking cup)

Attributed to the manner of Elbows Out
ca. 560–550 BCE
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 155
Obverse and reverse, cockfight

In the treatment of shapes as well as decoration, Attic vase-painting offers an endless array of permutations. Here the cockfight appears on a band-cup, which would have been used at a symposium (drinking party). This artist uses less detail than Tleson, for instance, yet he effectively characterized the birds' bulk and their eager heads.
