Bronze handle of a hydria (water jar)

Greek

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 154

Two sphinxes perch on the horizontal flange that was originally attached to the mouth of the vessel. A woman's head emerges at the base of the handle, flanked by two reclining banqueters. In the past the piece was severely cleaned of all archaeological corrosion products. It has recently been cosmetically toned with removable pigments.
