Terracotta bell-krater (mixing bowl)

Attributed to Python

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 171

Obverse, seated Dionysos
Reverse, satyr with phiale

The two sides of the vase are complementary: Dionysos receiving the offering from his satyr-attendant. The depiction of the wine god as a handsome youth is thoroughly South Italian. His special quality is further emphasized in that a tendril suffices to support his weight.
