A photographer and a scholar, Moholy published in 1939 A Hundred Years of Photography, one of the first histories of the medium to deal with more than technical issues. It opened with a quote of the famous nineteenth century French caricaturist Honoré Daumier: "Je suis de mon temps" (I am of my times). This simple and powerful statement equally applies to Moholy, her husband László Moholy-Nagy, and to this portrait.
Between 1923 and 1928, when Moholy-Nagy was a teacher at the Bauhaus in Dessau, Lucia Moholy was one of the most prolific photographers at the school. This portrait was made at the entrance to the "master's house" the two occupied at the Bauhaus. In the crisp and modern setting, wearing clothes both functional and elegant, Moholy-Nagy embodies the avant-garde artist of the 1920's
