Shimogo Town, Fukushima Prefecture
Shimogo Town, in Japan's mostly agricultural Fukushima Prefecture, is known for rock outcroppings that seem almost sculptural. Close inspection of Shibata's photograph, however, reveals not the irregular, naturally occurring rocks we expect to find but geometric cubes that have been placed in the river to help control erosion. Shibata seamlessly merges the organic and the man-made in this composition and reveals the deep integration of human action and natural forces in Japan's famously beautiful countryside.
