Canal St. Martin

Not on view
Some of Baron Haussmann's alterations to the city are barely visible to the modern pedestrian strolling the streets of Paris. The sewers, the catacombs, and the covering of the Bièvre River all changed the look and feel (and smell) of Paris, though they are largely hidden from view. Only recently, as tourist barges have begun to ply the 2.8-mile Canal Saint-Martin from the Bassin de la Villette to the Port de l'Arsenal, have people again been able to see the engineering work pictured here.
