Pablo Picasso Spanish

Not on view

This drawing was displayed at 291 in the early days of 1915, shortly after the "Picasso-Braque" exhibition. More than anyone else at the time, Marius de Zayas, who encouraged Stieglitz's displays of Picasso's art, perceived a deep connection between Cubism and African art. On many occasions he himself juxtaposed works from Africa with those by Picasso. In 1916, he stated: "In its plastic researches modern art discovered Negro Art. Picasso was its discoverer. He introduced into European art, through his own work, the plastic principles of negro art—the point of departure for our abstract representation."
