Sword Handle

Dayak people

Not on view

This handle for a sword (Mandau) from northern Borneo is carved from deer antler. A grip of plaited fiber covers the shaft, and the handle has a projecting spur and an openwork pommel of spiral form decorated with foliate motifs. While the upper surface of the spur and pommel are undecorated, a stylized floral motif with four petals appears on the back of the handle opposite the spur.
