Panel of Venus, “Pudica Type”
The pose of the female nude on this bone plaque recalls large-scale ancient Greek sculpture in the round that became popular throughout the Roman Empire and circulated through copies. Known as the Venus Pudica, or "modest Venus," this pose refers to the ancient Greek type of female nude covering parts of her body. In Late Antiquity, classical ideals of female modesty and beauty translated into a variety of media, including small-scale works of art.
